Chris Dunphy implied that 8-bit palettes are very, very popular in Glide games. Usually, it's because they are based on 8-bit software engines. Only now are we seeing games that use 16-bit or 24-bit textures.
VQuake is doing something similar to what we have to do. Quake's textures are all 8-bit, and VQuake has to map them all to 16-bit. (I think...)
